The town of Sutton, in Merrimack County, New Hampshire, includes the unincorporated villages of North Sutton and South Sutton, as well as Wadleigh State Beach on Kezar Lake. Originally named Perrystown, for Obadiah Perry, the town was first granted in 1749, but the French and Indian War prohibited settlement of the area until 1767, when David Peaslee was the first settler. Even with an extension in 1773, most of the original proprietors forfeited their claims, so the town was re-granted in 1784 to a group of settlers from Sutton, Massachusetts, for which the town was renamed. John S. Pillsbury, the 8th governor of Minnesota, and Matthew Harvey, the 13th governor of New Hampshire, were former residents of the town.s
