Incorporated as a borough, from portions of Pohatcong Township, by the New Jersey Legislature in 1911, the Borough of Alpha is in Warren County. Alpha was the last municipality in the county to be created from what had been farmland. In 1890, there were only seven houses in the area, but the town grew rapidly after 1891, when the cement industries began making use of the limestone rock in the area.
