Often known simply as Avon, the borough of Avon-by-the-Sea, in Monmouth County, was incorporated by the New Jersey Legislature in 1900 from parts of Neptune City. In 1855, the community was officially named New Branch, but it was also known as the Swanton Tract or the Lewis Greene Property, and later Key East, before finally being named for the Avon Inn, which was built in 1883.
