Bordering the Atlantic Ocean on Long Beach Island, in Ocean County, the borough of Barnegat Light was formed by the New Jersey Legislature in 1948, replacing the borough of Barnegat City, which had been created from portions of Long Beach Township in 1904. Barnegat Light is bordered by Barnegat Bay on the west, the Atlantic Ocean on the east, the Barnegat Inlet to the north, and Loveladies to the south. The township is home to the Barnegat Lighthouse.
