Barnegat Township, New Jersey was first incorporated as Union Township in 1846, from portions of Dover and Stafford townships, while the region was still in Monmouth County, becoming part of Ocean County after it was formed in 1850, and changing its name to Barnegat Township in 1977. Barnegat is also a census designated place within the township, both of which were named for nearby Barnegat Bay and Barnegat Inlet.
