Berkeley Township was created by the New Jersey Legislature, from portions of Dover Township, which is now Toms River Township, in 1875. Between 1898 and 1927, portions of the township taken to form Seaside Park, Seaside Heights, Beachwood, Ocean Gate, Pine Beach, and South Toms River. Berkeley is west of Beachwood and southwest of Toms River.
