The township of Bloomfield is in Essex County, New Jersey, which includes a portion of Silver Lake and all of Brookdale, both census-designated places. The township was formed in 1812, and named for the Presbyterian parish, which had been named for New Jersey Governor Joseph Bloomfield. In 1900, Bloomfield was incorporated as a town but, in 1981, residents voted to readopt the township form of government. Bloomfield is north of Newark, and northeast of Orange.
