Formed from parts of Bridgewater Township, Branchburg was incorporated as an independent township in 1845. The area was sold in small parcels to individual settlers, mostly Dutch or English, by the Raritans, a Lenape tribe. The township is bordered by Hunterdon County on the west, Bedminster Township on the north, and Bridgewater and Hillsborough townships on the south. The Lamington River and both the North Branch and the South Branch of the Raritan River flow through the township.
