Buena Vista was incorporated as a township in 1867, and named for the Mexican-American War Battle of Buena Vista. The township includes the communities of Buena, Buena Acres, East Vineland, Lake Ann, New Kuban, Newtonville, Pine Lake Estates, and Richland, as well as the unincorporated community of Collings Lake. Ninety percent of the township is within the New Jersey Pine Barrens.
