Byram Township was formed in 1798 from portions of the former Newton Township, and incorporated as one of New Jersey’s initial group of townships, named for Jephtah Byram and his family, who emigrated to the area after the American Revolution. Prior to that time, the community was known as Lockwood. The township is divided into sections, including the neighborhoods of Cranberry Lake, East and West Brookwood, Forest West, Lackawanna, and Lake Mohawk. Lubbers Run and Punkhorn Creek both flow through the township. Some locations in Byram Township carry a Stanhope mailing address.
