Incorporated as a borough in 1892, Caldwell is located in northwestern Essex County, New Jersey. In 1981, it was incorporated as the Township of the Borough of Caldwell, but reverted to a borough in 1995. Former President Grover Cleveland was born in Caldwell in 1837, where his father served as the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Caldwell is bordered to the north by North Caldwell, to the west by West Caldwell, to the south by Essex Fells and Verona, and to the east by Cedar Grove.
