Califon, New Jersey is a borough in Hunterdon County. Califon was a station along the High Bridge Branch of the Central Railroad of New Jersey. The community grew up around a milling business, and was initially called California. According to legend, the borough’s name was shortened to Californ in order to fit on its welcome sign. Califon is located north of the Kenneth Lockwood Gorge, on both sides of the South Branch of the Raritan River. Califon borders Lebanon Township and Tewksbury Township.
