Located across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, the city of Camden, New Jersey is the seat of Camden County. The city was incorporated in 1828 from parts of the former Newton Township. Initially in Gloucester County, Camden became part of Camden County when that county was organized in 1844. Camden is bordered by Collingswood, Gloucester City, Haddon Township, Pennsauken Township, and Woodlynne. Pettys Island is just offshore of Camden.
