Downe Township was established by Royal Charter in 1748, although it was originally known as Downes Township. It became Downe Township when it was incorporated as one New Jersey’s initial townships in 1798. The unincorporated community of Fortescue is located within the township. Downe Township is bordered by Lawrence Township, Commercial Township, Millville, and the Delaware Bay.
