Dunellen was established as a borough by the New Jersey Legislature in 1887, and incorporated in 1914. The community was settled in 1867, when the railroad established a station there, originally called New Market. Dunellen is in Middlesex County, in the central part of the Raritan Valley, along with Bound Brook, South Bound Brook, and Middlesex.
