Edison, New Jersey is a township in Middlesex County. Originally incorporated as Raritan Township in 1870, the township’s name was changed to Edison in 1954, in honor of Thomas Edison, whose main laboratory had been located in the Menlo Park section of Edison Township from 1876 to 1886. Settled by Europeans in the 17th century, the earliest village within the area that was to become Edison was Piscatawaytown, in the southern part of the township.
