Both the city, the township, and the Great Egg Harbor River, were named by Cornelius Jacobsen Mey, a Dutch explorer who came upon the inlet to the Great Egg Harbor River, and referred to the area as “Eyren Haven,” which translates Egg Harbor, due to the shorebird and waterfowl eggs that covered the meadows.
