Egg Harbor City and Egg Harbor Township are separate governmental entities, both located in Atlantic County, New Jersey. Topics related to either the city or the township are appropriate for this category. Egg Harbor Township was originally known as New Weymouth, but was incorporated as Egg Harbor Township in 1798. Egg Harbor City was incorporated in 1858. Both the city, the township, and the Great Egg Harbor River, were named by Cornelius Jacobsen Mey, a Dutch explorer who came upon the inlet to the Great Egg Harbor River, and referred to the area as “Eyren Haven,” which translates Egg Harbor, due to the shorebird and waterfowl eggs that covered the meadows.
