Elizabeth, New Jersey is the county seat of Union County. It was founded in 1665 and named Elizabethtown in honor of the wife of Sir George Carteret. It was the first capital of New Jersey and was under constant attack by the Redcoats during the Revolutionary War. It was renamed Elizabeth in 1855.
