Entirely surrounded by Manalapan Township, Englishtown was incorporated as a borough by the New Jersey Legislature in 1888, from portions of Manalapan Township. After the Battle of Monmouth, from which General Charles Lee retreated, it was in the dining room of the Village Inn in Englishtown that General George Washington and Lord Stirling drew up martial papers citing Lee for his conduct during and after the battle.
