Fairfield is a township within Essex County, New Jersey. It was originally formed as Caldwell Township by an Acts of the New Jersey Legislature, from portions of both Acquackanonk Township and Newark Township. Caldwell was then changed to Fairfield on November 6, 1963, was reincorporated as a borough on June 8, 1964 and was again changed to township on 1979 to gain advantage of federal revenue sharing policies. There is also a Fairfield Township in Cumberland County, New Jersey, formed by Royal Charter in 1697, and incorporated as one of New Jersey’s original townships in 1798. The unincorporated community of Fairton is located within Fairfield Township in Cumberland County.
