The area that was to become Franklin Lakes was settled by the Dutch in the early 1700s. The early settlers were mostly farmers who build solid farmhouses of sandstone and fieldstone, some of which are still standing. In time, mills were constructed along the creeks. Franklin Township was formed in 1772, and the Franklin Lakes area was a part of the township until 1922, when it broke away to become a borough.
