When Garfield was first developed in 1873, it was known as East Passaic, which was changed to Garfield in 1881, in honor of President James Garfield. In 1898, Garfield was incorporated as a borough, which included portions of Saddle River Township and Wallington. In 1917, Garfield became a city.
