Hackensack is the seat of Bergen County, New Jersey. Settlement in the area began in 1665, after the Lenni Lenape deeded the land that was to become Bergen County to the Dutch. Hackensack began as a village in New Barbadoes, and was still a village when it was chosen as the county seat in 1710. George Washington headquartered in Hackensack in November of 1776, and the British destroyed its original courthouse in 1780. Hackensack became a city in 1921, when New Barbadoes Township incorporated as a city and took the name of its chief village.
