Settled in 1812, and named for John Hammond Coffin, a son of one of the community’s earliest settlers, William Coffin, the town of Hammonton, New Jersey was incorporated in 1866. Initially, the community was named Hammondton, but the “d” was dropped at some point prior to incorporation. Hammonton is located between Philadelphia and the resort town of Atlantic City, along a former route of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Hammonton borders Folsom, Hamilton and Mullica townships, Camden County, and Burlington County.

Constructed as a silent movie theater in 1914, the building became a playhouse, then, in 1944, it was converted into a church, but became a storage space after about fifteen years.
