Hardyston Township is in the New York - New Jersey Highlands, part of the Crystalline Appalachians, in Sussex County, New Jersey. The township was created by Royal Charter in 1762, and named for Josiah Hardy, Royal Governor of New Jersey from 1761 to 1763. Initially, the township’s name was spelled Hardiston, but was changed after the American Revolution. Hardyston was incorporated as one of New Jersey’s original townships in 1798. Villages and other unincorporated communities within the township include Beaver Mountain, Beaver Run, Big Springs, North Church, Hardistonville, Holland, Rudeville, Monroe, and Stockholm.
