Hawthorne, in Passaic County, was originally part of the now-defunct Manchester Township, but broke away to organize as a borough in 1898. It is unclear whether the borough was named for the author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, or for the hawthorn bush, which was prevalent in the area. Hawthorne is north of Prospect Park and east of North Haledon.
