Created by Royal Charter in 1771, Hillsborough was incorporated as one of New Jersey's original townships in 1798. The township includes the unincorporated villages of Belle Mead, Blackwells Mills, Flagtown, Neshanic, and South Branch. Hillsborough was along the path that General George Washington traveled from the Battle of Princeton to winter quarters in Morristown. Washington drilled his troops on the Sourland Mountain in Hillsborough.
