Holmdel Township, in Monmouth, New Jersey, was formed from portions of Raritan Township in 1857. The township is about thirty-five miles south of Manhattan, and is considered a suburb of New York City. Bell Labs engineer, Karl Guthe Jansky, conducted some of the earliest work on radio astronomy in Holmdel in 1931.
