Hopewell, in Mercer County, New Jersey, was incorporated as a borough in 1891, from portions of Hopewell Township, which entirely surrounds the borough. Hopewell Township dates back to 1700, and incorporated by Royal Charter in 1755, becoming one of the original townships incorporated by the New Jersey Legislature in 1798. There is also a Hopewell Township in Cumberland County, formed as a precinct in 1748, and incorporated as one of New Jersey's initial townships in 1798.
