Howell Township, in Monmouth County, was incorporated by the New Jersey Legislature in 1801. Ramtown is an unincorporated community within the township. Initially, the township included all of what is now Wall, Lakewood and Brick townships, as well as all the boroughs along the Atlantic Ocean from the Barnegat Inlet of the Shark River Inlet at Belmar. Howell is northwest of Candlewood.
