Irvington, New Jersey is a township in Essex County. It is bordered by Hillside, Maplewood, Newark, South Orange, and Union. Once part of Clinton Township, the area was known as Camptown until the mid-19th century, and was changed out of concern that people would associate the activities in the Stephen Foster song, "Camptown Races," written in 1850, with the community. The town was renamed in honor of Washington Irving, and became an independent village in 1874. Irvington became a town in 1898.
