The borough of Island Heights is in Ocean County, New Jersey. Originally known as Doctor Johnson's Island, as it was included in a patent granted to him in 1680, it was later know as Dillon's Island, probably for a prominent Toms River man by the name of James Dillon. The island changed hands several times before it was incorporated as a borough in 1887, and named for its position on a steep bluff above Toms River.
