The borough of Keansburg is in Monmouth County, New Jersey. In 1609, the Half Moon, captained by Henry Hudson, is thought to have landed on the shores of what is now Keansburg, although it may have been Sandy Hook. His crewmen were attacked by Native Americans when they went ashore, and John Colman was killed, becoming the first European to be killed by a Native American arrow. Between that time and the early 18th century, the land was acquired by Europeans, and settled by Dutch, English and Scottish. Initially known as Waackaack, it was later renamed Granville, and again renamed in 1884 for John Kean, who helped establish the first post office there.
