Formed in the 1890s, the community was initially named New Orange, its name was changed to avoid confusion with one of The Oranges in Essex County. Kenilworth is bordered by Cranford to the southwest, Roselle Park to the southeast, Springfield Township to the northwest, and Union Township to the north and east.
