Maplewood Township is located in Essex County, New Jersey, sharing a border with West Orange and South Orange to the north, Newark and Irvington to the east, Union to the south, and Milburn to the west. The first European settlers arrived in the area that was to become Maplewood in 1675, acquiring the land from the Lenape tribes who had inhabited the area previously. The first settlement in what is now downtown Maplewood was originally named Jefferson Village, which was primarily agricultural and rural in nature. Maplewood was incorporated as South Orange Township in 1861, becoming Maplewood in 1922.
