Created in 1848, Marlboro Township is in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Morganville and Robertsville are unincorporated communities within the township. The first European settlers were Dutch, Scotch, and English, who purchased the land from the Lenape in the mid-1600s, and lived in isolated clearings carved out of the forest. The English and Scotch settlers were mostly Quakers, who established a meetinghouse and cemetery along what is now Topanemus Road, holding their first meeting in 1702. Marlboro was the scene of several skirmishes during the Revolutionary War, and was referred to as the “Hornet’s Nest” by the British because of the intensity of attacks on the British by local militia.
