The borough of Medford Lakes is an independent municipality completely surrounded by Medford Township, both located in the New Jersey Pine Barrens, within Burlington County. Medford Lakes was incorporated from portions of Medford Township in 1939. Its twenty-two lakes and surrounding lake communities are within the boundaries of the New Jersey Pinelands Commission, overseen by the Medford Lakes Colony, a homeowner association. Medford Lakes was developed as a resort community in which all construction would be made of logs, although only about ten percent of its current homes are of log construction.
