The borough of Milford, New Jersey is in western Hunterdon County, in an area along the Delaware River known as the Hunterdon Plateau. The area was settled sometime in the mid-18th century, when a grist mill was established there. After the mill was destroyed by fire, the settlement became known as Burnt Mills until the early 19th century, when it became known as Millford, losing on of its l’s in 1844. Milford was incorporated as a borough in 1911, although its incorporation wasn’t filed until 1925.
