Montclair was organized as a township in 1868, so that a railroad could be built to Montclair. In 1894, it was reincorporated as a town, becoming a township again in the late 1970s, in order to quality for federal aid available only to townships. The portion of Montclair north of Watchung Avenue is known as Upper Montclair and, although it is a part of Montclair, it has its own post office.
