Morristown, New Jersey is the seat of Morris County. The first European settlements in the area were by the Swedes and Dutch in the early 1600s, engaged in fur trading with the Native Americans. It became part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland until the English gained control of the region in 1664, at which point it became part of the Province of New Jersey. Named New Hanover by the British in 1715, Morristown was incorporated as a town in 1865.
