Formerly part of Warren Township, North Plainfield became an independent township in 1872, incorporating as a borough in 1885. Located in Somerset County, New Jersey, in the northern division of the Raritan Valley, along with Green Brook, the borough is bordered by Green Brook Township, Plainfield, and Watchung. What is now Green Brook was originally part of North Plainfield Township.
