The borough of Northvale, in Bergen County, was established in 1916. The first European settlers began moving into the area in 1683, after purchasing it from the Tappan Indians. Initially, the area that included what was to become Northvale was known as Tappan. As a result of a New York - New Jersey boundary dispute, the northern part became part of New Jersey, and was organized as Harrington Township, from which Northvale split in 1916.
