Oakland, in Bergen County, New Jersey, was incorporated as a borough in 1902. The area was settled by the Dutch in 1695, after purchasing the property from Minsi. The Dutch settlement that was created there was known as De Panne, or The Ponds. The area was sparsely settled, however; by 1710, there were only about ten families there. In 1870, the town’s name was changed to Oakland, and it was incorporated as such in 1902.
