Old Bridge Township is located in Middlesex County, New Jersey, and a suburb of New York City. Old Bridge was initially incorporated as Madison Township in 1869, which was changed to Old Bridge in 1975. Unincorporated communities within the township include Brownville, Laurence Harbor, Madison Park, and the village of Old Bridge. The township derives its name from the fact that the first bridge spanning the South River was built there and, as other bridges were built, the original one became known as the Old Bridge. Before that, it was known as South River Bridge.
