The borough of Paramus was incorporated in 1922. A suburb of New York City, eight miles west of upper Manhattan, Paramus has become one of the largest shopping destinations in the country. The area was settled in the 1660s. Although no major battles were fought in Paramus colonial troops under the command of Aaron Burr were stationed there, and George Washington established his headquarters there after the Battle of Monmouth.
