Situated north of Newark, on the Passaic River, in Passaic County, the city of Passaic was settled in 1678 by Dutch traders, and first named Acquackanonk Township. The city was formed within the township, and became an independent village in 1871, and a city in 1873. In 1931, Passaic was home to the first television station to transmit to the home and, in 1937, it became the first station to broadcast a feature film.
