The village of Pennington was established as a borough in 1890, from a part of Hopewell Township, which entirely surrounds the borough. The urbanization of the crossroads areas of Pennington, New Jersey took place during the mid-1800s and, in the last quarter of that century, the railroad was the major stimulus for growth. Pennington is south of Marshalls Corner and southwest of Centerville.
