Settled by Quakers in 1684, the city of Plainfield, in Union County, New Jersey, was originally established as a township in 1847, and was incorporated as a city in 1869. In 1878, the township was dissolved and parts of it were absorbed by Plainfield City, while the rest became Fanwood Township, which is now known as Scotch Plains. The city is the birthplace of former residence of Dudley Moore and Judy Blume.
