Created by Royal Charter as Readings, or Readings Town, in 1730, Readington was the first township created, in 1798, after Hunterdon became a county. The township is in the easternmost part of Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Readington is bordered the Lamington River and Rockaway Creek on the north, Somerset County on the east, the South Branch of the Raritan River on the south, and, to the west, by the old West Jersey Society's line, which crosses the Cushetunk Mountains. The unincorporated communities of White House Station and Potterstown are ancient communities located within the township.
