Ringwood, New Jersey was incorporated as a borough in 1918, although the region was populated by colonists as early as the 1740s, when the Ogden family built a blast furnace there in 1742. Prior to that, the area was inhabited by a Lenape tribe known as the Ramapough, whose descendants and Afro-Dutch migrants from New York formed a multiracial group known as the Ramapough Mountain Indians, recognized by the State of New Jersey as a tribe in 1980, although not by the federal government.
